thought bubble/shock manga effect using some tweaking and additional steps from this lovely speedline tutorial: [link] after seeing how the direction option worked I decided to try it with the pen eclipse tool and it worked - which was wonderful after a full day of fruitless searching and experimenting.

EDIT: the spacing was supposed to read 1000% however decreasing it will decrease the space between the lines, affecting how many times you have to repeat the last step. =)
manipulating the spacing will also affect the distance between the lines.
